Now, onto my deep message to change your life.
I am learning that where we are right now isn’t the end all be all, even if we once thought it would be. Where we are now, and what we’re doing right now is actually the culmination of what we’ve learned so far. It’s the previous evolution of our growth, and it’s time for us to define our next one.
Will I always be a freelance writer? No.
Will you always be stuck where you are? Absolutely not.
Let’s look back and see how far we’ve come, then decide where we want to go next.
I’ll go first.
When I got out of college I got a ‘good job’, you know the kind where you get vacation and make under 40k a year. It makes your parents happy, but unbeknownst to me, I was WILDLY unhappy, in fact… I gained 65 pounds! I didn’t become aware of this, as I was in a fog of macaroni and cheese and sauvignon blanc happy hours. Until I had a massive panic attack. I was sitting at my cubical desk… sorting through 85 pointless emails when my chest tightened, I couldn’t breathe and I had to leave work immediately. It was awful. What happened next was inclusive of weeks of fear, panic and ultimately the realization that I wasn’t doing what I loved.
It took me a bit to remember my true love – writing. And practicing yoga (I later became an RYT 200 Yoga teacher too.) These two realizations helped bring passion back into my life.
I started getting up early and writing, just 20 minutes a day.
About six months later, I was doing more yoga, reading more magazines (I love advertising copy!) and feeling more alive. I took on a freelance writing client, a friend of a friend kind of thing – and by the end of a year, I had about SEVEN trade agreements with all my yoga friends. It was nuts. I was doing everyone’s social media, writing and brand strategies. In exchange, I was getting all sorts of healing – which in hindsight, totally helped my transformation.
After a year and a half of the same cubical job, moving more, writing more and overall loving life more – I decided I’d switch jobs. I didn’t believe I could be a full-time freelance writer yet. So, I got a job event planning, which leads to walking over 20k steps a day and a BIG chunk of that weight I mentioned finally falling off.
Yet, something still felt like it was missing…
Nine months into that job, my boyfriend got the opportunity to take over a community in his line of work an hour away. I said, “LET’S MOVE!”
I was in so deep with my trades, clients and a full-time job – moving seemed like the perfect way to escape it and start over. Sill-ily, enough, I was STILL looking for a new full-time job once we moved. Advertising, I thought – that’s it!
So, I went to an interview with the coolest agency in town. The dude running it loved me and said I was a great writer. (Still… nothing clicked for me that that could be my path) But as much as he enjoyed my portfolio of articles, he had no job for me.
The panic returned.
“What am I going to do with my life??” I wondered.
Yet, each day I worried, I’d see a rainbow.
I woke up in the middle of the night during this transitioned with the idea to call Rich, The Adveritisng guy, and ask him for a contract. I got it.
$1,800 to write for a project. WOW! I could really do this… I thought.
Flash-forward 18 months later – My freelance writing career went from making $1800 a month to $7,000+! I now work for two super cool Real Estate CEOs and run strategy for some of the coolest people I’ve met so far. I have hired a writer and an editor who helps me with bigger projects and life feels pretty amazing most days, though no level makes you immune to the bumps of change, friend.
